Gender Symbols

The two familiar signs are borrowed astronomical symbols, and the rest of this range was added to represent a wider set of identities and relationships. All of them are text characters rather than emoji. This collection holds 10 gender symbols drawn from 1 Unicode block — mainly Miscellaneous Symbols. Code points run from U+2640 to U+26A9. All of them sit in the Basic Multilingual Plane, which means broad font support and very few encoding surprises.
Venus and Mars, again
♀ (U+2640) and ♂ (U+2642) are the astronomical symbols for Venus and Mars. Unicode encodes one character per identity, so these are literally the same code points listed in the planet collection.
The combined signs
⚥ ⚢ ⚣ ⚤ ⚦ ⚧ combine or modify the base forms to represent intersex, female and male homosexuality, heterosexuality, transgender and other identities. They were added to Miscellaneous Symbols over successive Unicode versions.
Support is uneven
The older ♀ and ♂ are in virtually every font. The combined signs are much newer and considerably less widely covered, so they are more likely to render as boxes on older systems.

Frequently asked questions
Are these emoji?
No, they are text symbols and inherit your text colour. Some platforms do render ♀ and ♂ in colour when they follow a variation selector, but by default they are monochrome text.
