The twelve zodiac signs occupy a contiguous run from U+2648 to U+2653, one of the tidiest sequences in Miscellaneous Symbols. The thirteenth character here is not part of that run and not part of the traditional zodiac. This collection holds 13 zodiac symbols drawn from 1 Unicode block — mainly Miscellaneous Symbols. Code points run from U+2648 to U+26CE. All of them sit in the Basic Multilingual Plane, which means broad font support and very few encoding surprises.

A contiguous block

Aries through Pisces are encoded in order, U+2648 to U+2653. If you know one code point you can derive the rest, which makes them straightforward to generate programmatically.

Ophiuchus is separate

⛎ (U+26CE) sits well outside that run. It represents a constellation the sun passes through but is not one of the twelve signs of Western astrology, and it was encoded separately for that reason.

Shared with planets

Several astrological symbols do double duty as astronomical ones. ♀ and ♂ appear in both the planet and gender collections on this site because they are literally the same characters.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a thirteenth zodiac symbol?

⛎ Ophiuchus is a real constellation on the ecliptic, but Western astrology uses twelve signs and does not include it. Unicode encodes it separately from the twelve because it is a different kind of thing.
