The shading characters
▤ ▥ ▦ ▧ ▨ ▩ are fill patterns — horizontal, vertical, crosshatch, diagonal. They were encoded to distinguish series in charts printed in black and white, and they still work for that when colour is unavailable.
Several sizes, several characters
□ ■ ▢ ◻ ◼ ⬜ ⬛ are all squares at different sizes and stroke weights. ⬜ and ⬛ are supplementary-plane characters with emoji presentation, so they often render larger and in a fixed colour.
Alignment is not guaranteed
Like all Geometric Shapes, squares have no defined relationship to the text baseline. Mixing sizes in one line usually produces visible vertical drift.
