Gothic and Blackletter Text: Unicode Copy and Paste Guide

Blackletter — Fraktur — is a historic script that Unicode encodes as a mathematical alphabet. Most letters come from one clean range, but seven do not, and those seven are why gothic text often looks slightly uneven.

A script, then a notation

Blackletter was the dominant printing hand across German-speaking Europe for centuries. Unicode did not encode it as a historic script; it appears in Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols because mathematicians needed a Fraktur alphabet distinct from ordinary letters, particularly for Lie algebras and ideals.

The seven exceptions

C, H, I, R and Z in the plain Fraktur alphabet, along with a couple of others, were already encoded in the Letterlike Symbols block before the mathematical alphabets were added. Unicode does not encode the same character twice, so those letters are drawn from a different block. Fonts often style the two ranges slightly differently, which is why a word containing an R or an H can look mismatched.

Bold Fraktur has no gaps

The bold blackletter alphabet was added as a complete set with no borrowed letters, so it renders more consistently than the plain one. If evenness matters more than weight, bold Fraktur is the better choice — a genuinely useful thing to know that follows directly from the encoding history.

Digits are not included

No Fraktur digits exist in Unicode. Numbers pass through unchanged at normal weight, sitting oddly beside blackletter letters. There is no substitute; the characters were never encoded.

Legibility is the real constraint

Blackletter is demanding to read even at print sizes, and these are mathematical characters rendered by whatever font is available rather than a designed blackletter face. At display-name size it can become genuinely illegible. Keep it to a few characters, and check at the size it will actually be seen.
